Save The Roosevelt Island Power Plant

March 30, 2026

I just signed the petition to save the Roosevelt Island Steam Power Plant and wanted to see if you could help by adding your name.

The historic steam power plant is in danger of being torn down, putting a major piece of the island’s industrial and architectural history at risk. Older buildings like this often contain hazardous materials such as asbestos and lead that release into the community once demolished, yet no clear testing results or safety strategy has been shared publicly.

Beyond the health risks, there’s a real loss of opportunity here. The plant could potentially be repurposed as a much-needed school or pre-K facility. The plant itself represents a large part of the island’s industrial history. But once a structure like this is gone, it’s gone.

We’ve already reached over 1,400 signatures, and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition here.
